- Rosenthal Format
-
- One of the
-
- Rosenthal Utilities (tm)
-
- R-Format replaces the standard floppy disk format so it no longer hangs
- the system during start up when the diskette is left in the A: drive.
-
- An embedded graphic and text message of your choice is displayed and the
- system then boots normally. The disk otherwise functions identically.
-
- The example graphic file R-FORMAT.PCX may be replaced with your own.
- Company logos, school emblems, product trademarks, club insignia etc. are
- just a few suggestions.
-
- Duplicating diskettes prepared by R-Format is straight forward. Be sure
- the duplicator copies all tracks entirely, not just the part reporting to
- contain data. If no other duplicator is available, DiskCopy will work.
-
- Processing a Diskette
-
- Start with a freshly formatted diskette. R-Format first reads the format
- pattern of the original disk including special, proprietary and
- interleaved address marks. R-Format works with standard as well as most
- unusual and copy protection formats. Use a quality diskette that formats
- 100% with no bad sectors.
-
- Run R-Format from DOS or MS-Windows and it will prompt you to enter the
- floppy disk drive letter to process (A or B).
-
- Both the graphic and text message embedded in the diskette have timers
- that control how long they will display. The timers are fairly accurate
- and independent of processor speed. The timer delay is bypassed when any
- key is pressed. Each of the two timers has a range of 3-600 seconds. If
- you set the display timers longer than about ten seconds, you should also
- show a message to prompt "Press any key to continue" in your graphic or
- text.
-
- After entering the delay times, R-Format will process the diskette. It
- then verifies the graphic by reading it back off the disk and displaying
- it. Pressing any key will continue and complete the process.
-
- If no errors are encountered, the diskette now has the graphic and text
- message embedded.
-
- Restarting the system with the floppy left in drive A: will start the
- sequence. First the 8 character manufactures identification will display.
- In most cases that will be R-Format, but if that is changed by subsequent
- operations like installation or copy protection programs, it could be any
- eight characters.
-
- Next the disk volume label (up to eleven characters) will display followed
- by the graphic. Most modern systems support VGA graphics, but if not, a
- "VGA graphic" message will display instead. The graphic displays for the
- programmed length of time or until any key is pressed.
-
- The text message then displays for its programmed time or until a key is
- pressed. The boot process then proceeds as if no diskette was left in the
- drive.
-
- Embedding Your Own Graphic and Text Message
-
- Before trying R-Format with your own graphic and text message, be sure you
- try it using the example R-FORMAT.PCX and R-FORMAT.TAG files supplied.
- Confirm everything is working correctly using the examples, before
- attempting to furnish your own.
-
- Save your graphic as a 320 X 200 X 256 color "PCX" file. The PCX format
- was developed by the Z-Soft corporation and is supported by most paint and
- photo type programs. R-Format requires a standard PCX type file with the
- name "R-FORMAT.PCX" to be located in the same directory. After confirming
- that R-Format operates as expected using the example files, replace the
- R-FORMAT.PCX file with your own graphic.
-
- Graphic files come in many formats, and PCX files come in several
- different screen options. Your graphic must be supplied only as a 320 X
- 200 X 256 color "PCX" file named R-FORMAT.PCX.
-
- Your text message up to 14 lines by 76 characters wide should replace the
- example file R-FORMAT.TAG. Use your editor or word processor and save the
- text as a non-document or ASCII file. Refer to your editors documentation
- for the editor you're not sure how to make an ASCII text file.
-
- Problems......?
-
- If you have any problems, first confirm R-Format works correctly with the
- example R-FORMAT.PCX and R-FORMAT.TAG files supplied.
-
- If your message displays strange or garbled letters, your editor is not
- producing the correct output. It must be plain ASCII text.
-
- If the graphic looks strange when R-Format reads it back off the disk and
- displays it for verification, the disk may have a bad sector in the last
- tracks. Bad disk sectors will also cause a "Data replaced VGA graphic"
- error message. Use a freshly formatted diskette with no bad sectors. When
- the system is restarted with the diskette in the A: drive, the graphic and
- text message will only display if they pass an integrity test. If
- corrupted or replaced by data, the graphic and text message will not
- display and the "Data replaced VGA graphic" message will show instead".
-
- The graphic and text message are stored in the least used sectors of the
- diskette. As the disk fills up sequentially, these last sectors won't be
- employed for data until the disk is nearly full.
-
-
- The Rosenthal Utilities (tm)
-
-
- R-Format is only one of the "Rosenthal Utilities (tm)". You're welcome
- evaluate this software for 30 days, after which registration is required.
-
- Please print and fill out the RU_ORDER.FRM file and return it with your
- payment.
-
- Producing more than 10,000 R-Formatted diskettes per year requires a
- negotiated license.
-
- Orders Outside the U.S.
-
- All international orders are sent by air-mail. See the order form
- (RU_ORDER.FRM) for shipping and handling rates.
-
- Yes! Visa or Master Card can now be accepted and makes currency exchange
- to US Dollars very simple.
-
- Please be sure to make your payment in "US Dollars" either by (US) cash,
- Visa or Master Card, international money order or check drawn on a US
- member bank. Otherwise banks want a fifty dollar processing fee to cash a
- twenty five dollar check. Sorry, euro-checks can not be processed.
